As lead design consultants for this highway project, CDR designed 48 modular panels that are reconfigured to produce two miles of unique designs. These retaining walls were cast-in-place at 72' intervals, and they utilize shadows cast by the sun to emphasize the crisp and dynamic textures that span the walls and change as the sun moves across the horizon. Although these panels were cast with standard highway construction materials in a normal construction environment, the intricate designs and details of these retaining walls defy industry norms. A pattern of exaggerated abstract geometry and gigantic oak leaves emulates the textured topography and inherent geometrical patterns of Kansas' vast agricultural landscapes as seen from a birds-eye perspective.
