The City of Wichita wins tha Public Improvement Award (PIA) for cities in the 50,000 and over population category. The PIA competition, sponsored by the American Council of Engineering Compaines (ACEC) of Kansas for 45 years, is unique in that it recognizes engineering projects for their benefit to the citizens of a community and not for engineering design. The City of Wichita won for their East Kellog Avenue/Woodlawn Interchange.

This Woodlawn Interchange Project was 1.04 miles in length and included two bridges, two stormwater pump stations, and two types of retaining walls.

The original roadway was a four lane arterial street with two-way traffic frontage roads. With the current improvements, there is a six lane expressway for US 54 / 400 traffic and two lane one-way frontage roads with turnarounds for the local and business traffic.
